We recently inquired with Apple’s technical group, regarding connection issues with the iPhone 3G to a Microsoft Exchange server. The default Exchange option ”Exchange” from the main setup screen is no longer using IMAP to communicate to an Exchange Server. Apple is now using Microsoft Exchange OMA (Active Sync). Ok, this is improved technology, integration, security etc. for Apple iPhone. However, if you have a corrupted SSL certificate on your Exchange server, or have no installed Certificate, you will not be able to access your Exchange server through ActiveSync. Even though there is an option to turn off encryption, this setting, Non-encryption is not supported. So, if you need to run your iPhone 3g without certificates, you will need to use the old IMAP route, selecting other during the configuration process.

Otherwise, you will have to invest some time and technology to configure a certificate on you Exchange server and open up 443, for OMA ActiveSync.
There is a prerequisite document on the Apple web site
, which also instructs the network admin to open Port 443 on the edge firewall. So, it appears Apple want to keep everything secure? No support for non ssl OMA connections?
Here are some steps to test your OMA configuration of your Exchange server.
From the outside of your network, from home, use IE (Internet explorer) and open the following:
https://mail.domainserver.com/OMA
Apple’s iPhone 3G does not support non-SSL connections to a Microsoft Exchange Server
During the Microsoft Exchange email account configuration process, on the iPhone, the default connection type is SSL connection. After saving the setting, you can manually modify the connect to a non-SSL connection. Although this option is available, it definitely is flawed with a major bug. Reason, we proved non-SSL (Port 80) connections function flawlessly on a Mac Pro and XP Pro PC, but not through the iPhone 3G OMA.
One last note: I always found that you can now change the email signature (within settings) so that it doesn’t reveal to your corporate group that you just sent an email from your iPhone/Touch, which I think some may find a good feature

Hello,
We are a local computer retail repair shop and will be contacting you. We have a few customers who have purchased their employees iPhone 3G’s and we are having issues getting their new phones connected to their Exchange server. Previously their blackberrys were working with POP without issue, but their exchange server setup is having issues.
When contacting Apple’s iPhone support, we’re told that there are just probably some updates from Microsoft we haven’t downloaded to the server, yet.
Thanks!
I have the new 3g iphone – i have had it for over 3 months and have not been able to connect mail, calenders or anything to my microsoft account on the exchange server in my workplace.
again certificate problems and exchange registartion failed issues.
can you help – we are based in the Uk.
I got an iPhone 3G as a gift from my best friend. This phone is the best phone that i ever had, great style and great features. I luv my iPhone 3G.
I called at 8:30 CST on a Friday night after working on my client’s Small Business Server with Exchange for over 3 hours trying to figure out what was wrong. I kept running into this web site as I searched the net for a solution. Understand, with over 25 years of experience and training, I’m no slouch at IIS, Exchange, routers, firewalls or SBS!
I received a return call approximately 60 minutes later. It went something like this:
“Hi is this Dan?”
“Yes.”
“Are you still having trouble syncing your IPhone?”
“Yes.”
“Ok, Lets see what we can do for you.”
Exactly 18 minutes and 2 seconds later (including bill payment, other chit-chat pleasantries and a little IT Technical banter) I hung up my phone. The server was FIXED and the iPhone synced!
I’ve seen other people work at this speed. Its only when you are completely in tune with how a system works can you click, select, edit and modify a system this quickly. I can’t tell you how impressed I was by the quality, speed and professionalism of their work! And the price is a BARGAIN!
I look forward to having a problem like this again at another clients! (well not really lol, but if I do I KNOW who to call! )
